Food Innovation Center renovation: ready for the next generation of food & biotech scale-ups

Last September, a.s.r. real estate announced the acquisition of a fourth office and laboratory building at the Biotech Campus Delft by the ASR Dutch Science Park Fund. The building became part of the campus portfolio with the explicit ambition to create new space for food and biotech scale-ups. Together with Planet B.io, a.s.r. shares its plans to renovate and transform the building into a future-proof, multi-tenant Food Innovation Center (FIC).

Originally built in 2003, the Food Innovation Center (FIC) on the Biotech Campus Delft was fully occupied until mid-2025. Following the relocation of its former occupant, the building became available and is currently undergoing a major renovation to prepare it for a new phase within the Planet B.io ecosystem. This opportunity is being used to future-proof the facility and better align it with the needs of growing food and biotech companies. The renovation focuses on both quality and sustainability. The building will receive a modernized look and technical upgrades to improve usability and attractiveness for new tenants. At the same time, significant steps are being taken to enhance energy performance and prepare the FIC for long-term sustainability ambitions.

The preliminary design, developed by Vakwerk Architecten, has been completed, and the first renovation activities have already started, including initial roof works. In the first quarter of 2026, work will continue on technical installations such as cooling, lighting, and ventilation systems. The renovation also includes the redesign of shared areas, with a strong focus on welcoming, functional spaces such as the entrance, atrium, pantry, and informal meeting areas. The renovated FIC is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026.

The Planet B.io buildings' identities will be strengthened by a unique interior design. The Food Innovation Center will feature pink accents, while the interiors of the other two Planet B.io building - Beijerinck Center and Van Iterson House - are characterised by yellow and blue which together mirror the colours of the Planet B.io logo and create a clear visual identity across the campus.

The renewed Food Innovation Center will primarily host food-biotech and industrial biotech scale-ups that require turnkey laboratory facilities (ML-1 and food-grade) combined with office space. Thanks to its flexible layout, the building is designed to support companies as they grow, enabling a smooth transition from start-up to scale-up within one location.

Being located in the Food Innovation Center means becoming part of the Planet B.io ecosystem, where specialized facilities are combined with a strong biotech network.  Residents benefit not only from laboratories and offices, but also from shared campus amenities such as hospitality, meeting and conference facilities, and parking, as well as proximity to knowledge institutions and industry partners on and around the Biotech Campus Delft.

With this renovation, Planet B.io and a.s.r. real estate further strengthens the campus strategy: creating a scalable innovation pipeline and offering affordable space for growing companies that often fall between early-stage start-ups and large corporates.
